Dear reader,

If you’re familiar with Nonviolent Communication, you probably know that the giraffe is often used as a metaphor for compassionate ways of communicating and seeing the world:🦒 Because of its long neck (and therefore a larger view of any situation)

🦒 Large heart

🦒 Its ability to break down thorny acacia leaves to get to the water within (just as NVC helps us uncover the precious messages underlying judgements and criticism)

A reminder that as large as the giraffe’s heart may be, it doesn’t forget its own needs—and finds ways to meet these needs so it can survive and thrive.

Warm regards,

Ranjitha

3 Quotes on dialogue

Change happens by listening and then starting a dialogue with the people who are doing something you don't believe is right.

~Jane Goodall

True dialogue can only happen if I enter the conversation willing to be changed by it. If I am unwilling to change, to be affected sufficiently to consider options new to me, on what grounds am I expecting the other person to change?

~ Miki Kashtan

In true dialogue, both sides are willing to change.

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

Article of the fortnight

Feedback at work can be tricky because few of us learn how to offer feedback that can be honest and supportive—it doesn’t have to be an either/or.

This piece by Kumar Abhishek on Forbes suggests that feedback is effective when:

  • It is offered in conditions that create psychological safety (and in NVC terms, we focus on the intention to connect)

  • It clearly conveys what the feedback is about, and focuses on what the person can do differently in the future (rather than what went wrong in the past)

  • It is timely and well-thought out
