Five Finds of the Fortnight: Edition 6

NVC & social change

Dear reader,

What does NVC have to do with social change? And how can we begin working towards social change?Recently, I had a conversation with Manasi Saxena, CNVC-Certified trainer and founder, enCOMPASSion to understand more about this. Manasi and her team have been leading relief efforts in the Delhi-NCR area for over a year now, and in the video linked below, she shares her experiences and reflections on how her understanding of NVC supports the work she does. Scroll down to watch the video.

And as always, I’d love to hear from you. Leave a comment of reply to this email to share your thoughts on the nuggets in this edition.

1. Quote of the fortnight

Beneath every behaviour there is a feeling. And beneath each feeling is a need. And when we meet that need rather than focus on the behaviour, we begin to deal with the cause, not the symptom.

~Ashleigh Warner,

Psychologist

2. On appreciation

Last week, our practice group discussed appreciation—and why it can be so hard to receive. We talked about how we’ve seen appreciation being used as comparison, manipulation or reward; which is why it can be uncomfortable receiving it when the intentions are not clear. And then I came across this comic by Cynyassy, and it echoed a lot of what came up in our practice group discussions. Click on image to see all panels.

3. Offering empathy

It’s possible to hold empathic space for someone else without getting exhausted. In this article, LaShelle Lowe-Charde offers some suggestions on how.

4. NVC and social change

Watch my conversation with Manasi Saxena on NVC, social change, cancel culture, imperfection, and starting where we are.⠀

5. Upcoming event alert

Towards the end of April, Sarah Peyton will be offering a 3-day workshop on the Living Bridges platform—Shame and Privilege: Exploring and Healing with NVC and Neuroscience. Read more or sign up here.
